Window Glass Replacements: Should You Repair or Replace?

When faced with window damage, it can be difficult to decide if your window needs to be repaired or completely replaced. There are a variety of factors that contribute to this decision because not all window damage is the same. In today’s blog post, Ryan’s all-glass will look at a few specific window glass replacement situations and help determine whether or not you need to replace the window or repair it.

Rotting Frames

While most people think of broken glass when it comes to window glass replacements, it is often the frame that is the problem. Whether the frame is rotting or damaged in some other way, a low-quality frame can cause your windows to function improperly. Rotting frames can even damage the glass itself. Wood deteriorates when it isn’t primed or painted correctly and it’s then exposed to moisture, mold or insects.

Repair or Replace? If the damage is minor, such as paint chips or scratches, repair is always a possibility. If the frame has thoroughly rotted, however, replacement is likely the best option. This is especially true of older windows that are no longer as efficient as they used to be.

Broken Panes

If you are dealing with broken window panes, replacement is going to be hard to avoid. In fact, window glass replacements are specifically for broken window panes. The question, however, is whether or not the entire window needs to be replaced or if you simply need window glass replacement. Similarly, not all windows are the same, and some might be repairable. If you are dealing with scratches or minor cracks, they might be repairable. You may also want to try to repair vintage or custom windows that could be more expensive to replace.

Repair or Replace? In most cases, you will want a window glass replacement. However, if dealing with minor damage, you can repair window panes.

Foggy Windows

Foggy windows are very frustrating because there isn’t always an easy fix. Glass fogs as a result of moisture that seeps in through loose or old seals in your windows. As that moisture settles between the panes, windows will begin to appear foggy and generally less attractive.

Repair or Replace? Replace. While foggy windows might seem like something that can be fixed, it is difficult to get in between the panes to make those repairs. Finding window glass replacements for these windows is the best route.
